Upcoming Education

Ecological Orchard Workshop Sat, Feb 21, 9-12 noon

People are invited to attend an “Ecological Orchard Workshop” on Saturday, February 21, 9 am - 12 noon at the Laupahoehoe School Garden. There is no admission charge. Food and beverages will be provided. Space is limited. RSVP by February 14.

Attendees will learn how to worwith nature to beat the weeds and increase production with ecological agriculture and permaculture practices, including plant communities, companion plants, and biofertilizers that replace inputs, labor, and machines with ecological systems and processes.

The hands-on part of the workshop will demonstrate a simple, scaleable plant community for trees, fencelines, and row crops to keep weeds out and improve the soil.

The workshop will be led by David Sansone of Hawaii Edible Landscaping, LLC, which is based in Papaaloa. He has over 25 years of experience in ecological agriculture and plant community development in a wide range of climates and growing conditions.

According to Sansone, “Native ecosystems depend upon mutually beneficial plant communities that provide ecosystem services like weed and pest control.  This helps explain why monocrop plantings require extensive inputs and labor and are more susceptible to weeds, pests, disease, and drought. When we copy nature’s blueprint, we can ‘let nature do the work’ to beat the weeds, increase production, and improve the soil."

Hawaii Edible Landscaping, LLC is “replanting paradise” through consultation, design, installation, maintenance, and education in edible landscaping, ecological agriculture, vetiver slope stabilization, native species restoration, and education.

Sponsors: Laupahoehoe Community Public Charter School, the Honeybee Education Project, Malaai, and Revitalizing Hawaii.

Ecological agriculture systems can "let nature do the work" to improve the soil and eliminate the weeds without dependence on expensive imported inputs like fuel, machinery, or herbicides.

This research garden planted on severely degraded land that was industrially farmed for 100 years.

When the taro was harvested, the formerly compacted soil was "biotilled" and "biofertilized 3 feet deep.
